Where are the GGR-Peat field sites?

The project has four field sites across the UK. These include upland peat blanket bogs and drained agricultural lowland fen.

  1. Lapwing; agricultural land in a lowland fen in South Yorkshire.
  2. Featherbed Moss; upland blanket bog in the Pennines.
  3. Pwllpeiran upland blanket bog in Wales
  4. Pymoor, agricultural land in a lowland fen in East Anglia

What are we doing at the GGR-Peat field sites?

Uplands

Large-scale experimental plots have been established at these two sites to assess various restoration strategies, including

  • Selective vegetation removal
  • Sphagnum moss planting (a keystone species in upland peatland ecosystems).
  • Biochar application in selected plots
  • Selective addition of suppressants, like gypsum, to reduce or inhibit methane emission

Regular measurements at these sites include GHG emissions, plant cover and biomass, soil structure and infiltration rates, and insect abundance & diversity.

Lowlands

Large-scale experimental plots and recently also field-scale plantings have been established at these two sites to assess management strategies compatible with agricultural production, including

  • Raised average water-table levels
  • Establishment and testing of a range of water-tolerant plants
  • Biochar application in selected plots

Regular measurements at these sites include GHG emissions, plant cover, productivity and biomass yield, soil structure and infiltration rates.
